Melinda Young Landlines ocean detail

Landlines by Melinda Young

Landlines is an exhibition of contemporary jewellery and small woven vessels by Melinda Young. The work in the exhibition is a response to the colour and texture of the landscape of Broken Hill and the APY Lands, the coastline of Arnhem Land and the Illawarra Escarpment, all areas where Young has lived and worked over the past few years. This is work that is made while travelling across and on the land, using deliberately portable, yet labour-intensive and meditative processes of making. Coil weaving for the vessels, hand-coloured and rolled metal beads threaded onto hand-spun linen cord for the jewellery. The Landlines series pays homage to these places as a series of wearable landscapes and intimate vessels, inspired by the particular patina of the land and sea.
